PostSubject: Powering my 77-805d   Powering my 77-805d Icon_minitimeSat Nov 16, 2019 9:14 pm

Hay people. I have plugged in a cigarette socket power meter, its highest peak power of my car was 14.8v

My 77-805d says 13.8 on the power socket at the back.

Will powering off my car at max 14.8v damage my rig?

Cheers matt.

Hi Matt,

(Boring lesson follows)
13.8 volts specification came from a cars average voltage output.
The "average" because of the following :-

The "12 volt" car battery is actually a 12.6 volt source, with a float voltage of 13.3 volts, the alternator needs to put out more than this to actually charge the battery and is usually about 14.4 volts.

Confused? Hence the weird specification of 13.8 volts, it lies somewhere between the car at rest just pulling from the battery and when the car is running with the alternator charging the battery.

Yet you've measured 14.8 volts.........again all of this is an "average" your power meter may have read the peak voltage.

To put your mind completely at rest,

(Here is the answer)

Your Midland portapack, (and pretty much any device intended to run from a car), will run at :-

13.8 volts +/-15%

So anywhere from 11.73 volts to 15.87 volts.

You'll be safe then.

( You can search for the original manual on the internet and various sources will appear, in the specifications it will state the 13.8v +/-15%. Just if you needed proof rather than take it as gospel from some old fart on a forum Very Happy )

Ha, ha! Cheers for that Matt, not such a useless old fart as I imagine.

Antennas open a can of worms and search for the holy grail quest, any antenna is always better than no antenna.

Had to search a thunderpole to see if it was the same as a thunderpole from 30 years ago, looks pretty much like the same old bit of kit!!
It'll work and handy having the base load coil as a spring, they flip back coming out of car park height restrictions unlike many a Firestick I've seen break off under the same circumstances.

Loved my Midland portapak back in the 80's. Used to plug it in my motorbike for mobile use and carry it around CB meet ups.

All the best with it mate,

Victor

Many of those old farts aren't right though. There's a lot of bull manure in the CB world especially when it comes to antenna systems such as your coax having to be a specific length.

I'd say "some" of those old farts, rather than "many" Very Happy
(Probably just in my own defence mind you)

"Many" suggests the majority.
"Many" people believe the world is flat, we all know it's only "some".

But I get your point.
Adverts state "many" people bought their product and were happy with it....the sales data shows "some" people.

Wow it's not even the antenna that opened a can of worms here lol... To be fair, the manufacturer's data is not the kind of bum fodder you might imagine since they know their product. Anyway just a note to keep an eye on that charging voltage since it's very close to 15v which suggests a possible alternator issue.

Note I say possible, depending on age of car & type of charging system it could be fine (a modern motor with stop/start and smart charging for instance I'd expect to have higher voltage than usual this time of year as it's working harder to keep the battery topped off), just with a standard alternator though 15v is about the limit before I'd start looking for an issue.

I wouldn't worry too much about it but as you already have a voltmeter it's worth keeping an eye on.

Now, onto the real can of worms. The antenna I run on my car is actually the cheapest bottom-loaded magmount setup I could find on ebay (no-name jobbie £19 From Kamsat) and it's exceeded all expectations by far. SWR under 1.1/1 over the UK40 and CEPT (after realising it needed about 3" trimmed off to get it to tune) and gets out better than I hoped too.

Hahahah i didn't mean to cause a fight,

Yeah its a 2006 ford ranger pick up truck currently at 14.2 its only ever hit 14.8 twice i think it normally runs at 14.1-2 i have now changed my mind on an antenna and going for the mini stinger instead found someone selling them on ebay for 30 pounds with a 6" mag postage included so think that's not a bad price. I don't want a massive antenna on my car though so looking for something around 1m high.

That sounds more normal as an average yes, possibly the higher readings were a minor spike from switching off a load like heated screen/mirrors or turning the lights off as it gets light in the morning.

I looked at those mini stingers but finances dictated the cheapest bottom-loaded one & I'm so pleased with it! Antennae are such a subjective thing though unless you really get into the technicalities (I think it can even vary depending on the vehicle with magmounts), like Vic said any antenna is 100% better than no antenna at all.

Hi Matt,

That stinger sounds like a bargain with mag mount and postage combined. I do hope that whatever you get serves you well.

We all have to start somewhere, even us old farts did at one time Wink

Hi Dan,

Seems like you got a cracking bargain of an antenna and best of all it's serving you well and happy about it Very Happy

Ooh you could get into all sorts of debates on best places to put your mag mount, how much metal the car's got, what coax to use, blah, blah, blah. Just stick it on, swr it, key that mike and if you make contacts then job's a good'un.

The old truckers used to rub a little Vaseline over the metal screw on base, (after you screw the antenna in place), to prevent corrosion. You can get an open or short circuit from corrosion, suddenly your coax becomes the antenna, swr jumps up, you scratch your head, cut the coax to put a new pl259 on, swr lowers, hmmm cut more, swr lowers again and hey presto an observational basis to start off a myth Wink

All the best to you lads, glad you're enjoying your radio

Hi Matt, as Vic said 14.8v will not damage your rig , that's the average charge voltage given out by an alternator, the voltage varies from one manufacturer to the another depending on the age of your battery, It should read between 13.6 and 15.8 volts depending on battery condition and state of charge when the engine is running in order to run the car and charge the battery. Of course you should always connect your radio directly to your battery to avoid static given off from the cigarette plug adapter..
