Hi new to this but I have been using pmr ch8 to speak to the little group in my village.
I have been hearing some skip coming through had a contact 40 miles away.
question should I change the group channel as to not interfere with it.
is ch 8 the calling channel ?

thanks

stuart

Having recently returned to the airwaves I have discovered PMR, connecting with a group of local radio operators very much like yourself who were also using CH08 but decided to move it up to CH10 for the very same reasons you are discussing here.
The C.B. etiquette was always to make your contact on the calling channel then vacate to another free frequency to carry on your extended contact freeing up the calling channel for other users to use, although I found as I travelled around the country on occasion, different areas had different calling channels.
Once you have a group on the go it probably is a good idea to move it, members from the group I have joined tell me they chose CH10 as it is out of the 01-08 channel range to avoid children playing with walkie-talkies on the same frequencies locally.

PMR 446 has no official 'calling channel'.

It's only ever been for short range/same site comms and usually with legal equipment, you'll not interfere with anyone beyond line of sight.

If your pals have 8 channel radios which to me sound legal...then carry on & on whatever channel you want, that's what its for Smile

You need a calling channel.Otherwise It becomes chaotic.Channel 8 is The semi-official calling channel.
