Hi
I'm in need of some help and I thought I'd ask you guys. Recently I got my foundation licence and I'm looking at radios but I can't figure out what to go for! I don't want to spend a lot at the moment so I was thinking about a 2m/70cms rig to start. When I get around to a big radio what's the best to start with?
Thanks in advance and 73's
Gary

Hi Little fella,
I'm in the same boat as in not a lot of money spare. With this in mind, for 2m/70cm if you go hand-held you can get a Baofeng for £30 or less. Some people love them some hate them but for the money you can't go wrong.
I got a mobile rig but use it as a base station - CRT Micron. Or the Retevis/Anytone, they are the same rig, just Re badged. Well pleased with it, cracking little rig.
HF Set, for the price you won't beat the Yaesu FT-450D, it's got all the filters to learn and master as well as a built-in ATU which comes in handy. It's a great starter rig to cut your teeth on.
Yes, I'm sure if we could afford we would all like the top of the range shack in a box complete with the waterfall but if you're on a budget have a look and check the reviews on YouTube ect. If you go for the Yaesu you'll have to have it opened for general coverage to use on 27.555Mhz ect, allow /add an extra £30 to have this done at the shop if your buying new. I'm sure someone else will be able to offer other recommendations. And of course there is always second hand.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Stay safe

Hi Dale
I was looking at that one for the 2m. Not keen on handheld but I'm sure they work great. Thanks, I'll have a look at the yaesu. It's a blinking mine field isn't it!

Hi Gary.

I would consider a couple of HF options at the moment. The afore mentioned FT-450d is an excellent entry level HF & 6m radio I have one and can't fault it for the money. If you want something a little more cutting edge there's the Xiegu G90 a modern SDR radio, this one is QRP 20 watts only but that's enough for me. If you want to spend a bit more the Icom IC-7300 an unbeatable SDR radio for the money.

73's Gary.

Hi Gary

For 2m /70cm you won’t go wrong with a CRT Micron , will also open up for PMR , cost around £100
HF Yaesu 450d or Yaesu ft 891
HF and VHF/UHF Yaesu 991a
