I have a Wilson 1000 on my house roof and a mag mount mounting as the roof is metal, use this for local contacts around my location, working very well with the President MC Kinley for a few months now, all bands and on basic radio power it has been very good on rx and tx, I had a set up like this in 2001 to 2005 and with a President Lincoln, post this if it might help to get some one on the air in a location what has limits on height and the man next door not enjoying he 8 meter twig or a mobile set up been used at home now all this local lockdown rules are spreading, i know many buildings in the Uk do not have metal roofing, but it might get you thinking how to get a good standard mobile twig up on the roof.

Take care and 10-10

I did the same type of set up like that glen back in the illegal AM days of CB with my little 40 ch lol in the UK back in the 70s where I lived at home with my parents when I was a kid , but I used a K40 mag mount on a big sheet of steel on the flat roof where my bedroom window looked out on to it was the roof of extension what my dad built to make the kitchen and bathroom bigger so it was high up I use get out really good people was surprised when I told them what I was using.

Nice one Glenn 👍

I'm still of the opinion that "any antenna is better than no antenna!" Smile

Martin's example reminds me of how many of us started out from 'humble' beginnings.
I myself had the old ubiquitous DV27 on a biscuit tin with wires strung out for a groundplane Wink It's what got me started back in the day and shocked me on the first summer 'skip' hitting continental Europe with it! Happy days indeed!

A little ingenuity goes a long way to help get us, or even keep us on the air.

All the best,
Victor

I was quite lucky having that K40 cos they was expensive for 16 year old back then lol , but I made my money back by selling it to my uncle who was long distance lorry driver and that money went towards my first proper home base antenna which was a original 5/8 Hygain Silver Rod and that stood out a bit more than a K40 on the back extension roof ,my mum panicked when she saw it with CB still being illegal lol but she always said your not really doing wrong talking to people on a radio .

My 1st antenna was a fire stick on a old MG boot lid in the loft, was working well for a year or so, then the cheap 9ft dipole went up near my bedroom window, was a happy time for me, great hobby and i had a electronics teacher at school who was all so in to Cb and he would help me and me friends with radio tips, this was in 1980, Am days, teacher was well laid back in his teaching,

Take care ,
Glenn

Glem,

ok on the Wilson 1000 using  mag mount.

I have my Sirio GainMaster set up on a 48ft Mast (BASE of the antenna ) and it is absolutely amazing. Great fun to put together and very easy. RX has been improved a lot. When I go on the Southern & South Coast Thursday night NET 27.385 SSB I can hear stations from all over the country whilst other stations only just have a voice pattern or can't hear at all.

I have expanded my President McKinley and my power meter tells me i,m putting out just over 25 watts on UK FM, ( back of the box)and pretty much the same on the sidebands. Once you are used to the MENU it's a lovely radio. The NB and HIGH CUT are really useful.

Do you have your McKinley running on expanded mode and if so what power levels are you achieving, and do you LIKE the McKinley.

Steph

I use the Mk Kinley on the Wilson for local area radio only, so its all as it came out of the box, the new Lincoln I use on a gain master and  Yeasu 450D for DX, and even have a cobra 19eu a very basic radio stuck on ch 2 , in my area a lot of trucks use the channel.
Gain master has been great, Wilson is very good for the local radio, had a very good copy on usb last week, close 70km.
Thanks for your reply Redsrpeite, Steph.
