As far as ssb goes, people tend to use "Q-codes"
Originally derived from Morse code, these are "procedural" codes
eg CQ is calling for a contact aka SEEK YOU
QSY = change frequency
QRO = high power or increase power
QRP = low power or reduce power
QSL = confirm or QSL? = do you confirm?
QRT = stop transmitting or shutting down

This is very brief but the best bet is to just use plain English

I just listened to a variety of people and everyone had their own way of calling dx. Then when i was confident i started calling dx and not one person called back.
Soon found out that my radio needed tuning so soon as i had it tuned i put a call out and got a load of people calling me back.
There is a lots of ways to dx and i normally go hello frequency or cq frequency or good morning-evening frequency this is base station/mobile station call sign calling frequency and standing by or listening etc.
Good luck and have fun Mau5matt

The period around the shortest day is often quite good for propagation, so putting out a call on Dec 25th is well worth doing. I have often worked DX on Xmas Day while the family are watching whatever garbage is on the telly!

Being new to SSB I found the q codes online and printed them off and highlighted the most often used codes so that i can keep them in the car with me.
